As a future bride, the most exciting and important part of planning a wedding is the dress. Contemporary television will have you believe that finding your perfect wedding dress entails dealing with a lot of snooty assistants, bottomless glasses of champagne and trying on an endless assortment of dresses covered in hideous frills before you suddenly and miraculously find the perfect wedding dress which you then discover you can’t afford. Real life is a little less dramatic and offers more options when it comes to procuring the perfect dress.
1. Buy a Ready-to-Wear Dress
Supporting local enterprise is always a good idea, so pop into a couple of the bridal stores in your area and see if you can find anything that works for you. Even if you don’t find one that you want, trying on different types of dresses will give you a good idea of what works best for your figure. Most bridal shops offer alterations if you find a dress you like but feel that it needs a bit of tailoring.
2. Have a Dress Made
The best way to get exactly what you want is to find a good tailor and have your dress made. The dress will be tailored to suit your body and you will be able to choose exactly what kind of material to use.
3. Rent a Dress
Most bridal shops in South Africa offer a rental option on their dresses. This is a more cost effective way to procure a dress that you might otherwise not be able to afford.
4. Borrow a Dress
If money is particularly tight, there are no rules that say you can’t borrow a dress from one of your friends. The only problem you might encounter while doing this is that you won’t be able to alter the dress in any way.
5. Inherit a Dress
Consider using your mom or your grandmother’s wedding dress. Not only will you make them really happy but a gorgeous old-fashioned wedding dress would work perfectly with a vintage-chic themed wedding.
6. Buy Second Hand
If you specifically want a vintage looking dress but have no heirlooms to choose from then try looking at a couple of thrift shops or online. You never know what treasures could be waiting for you on Bid or Buy or Gumtree.
7. Shop Online
If you are still struggling to find what you want you can always try a couple on online shops. This is a little risky and will take a bit of effort on your part, but there are many online stores that are cost effective and ship internationally. If it doesn’t fit perfectly you could always get it altered to the right specifications.
