Once you’ve said “yes” and allowed the man of your dreams to place a gorgeous ring on your finger, it’s easy to get caught up in wedding plans and a dizzying sequence of events (engagement parties, bridal showers, bachelorette parties etc) that don’t remotely prepare you for married life. Being married and planning a wedding are two very different things, but even though the excitement of planning and executing a wedding only comes along once in a marriage, there are some very good – and more permanent – things about settling down to a life of marital bliss.
Better Sex
As much as people like to get hung up on the thought of “one sexual partner for the rest of your life” the truth is that married people have better (and more!) sex. Married partners are more in tune with each other’s bodies (think practice makes perfect) and are more open to each other’s sexual fantasies. Married sex means less guilt and insecurity and being in a loving, committed relationship helps when it comes to shedding all those pesky inhibitions in the bedroom. Married sex is also safer (no risk of STDs in a committed relationship) and accidental pregnancies are less scary when they occur within a happy marriage.
Better Health
Marriage is good for your health and longevity. Research shows that married people are less likely to engage in risky behaviour such as drinking and smoking heavily. They are also more responsible about regular visits to the doctor and about eating healthily. Statistically married people also enjoy better mental health.
Better Finances
It’s kind of a no-brainer: two salaries are better than one. This means that you can afford a few extra perks like a better home, more entertainment, flashier cars and longer vacations. Being married also means that things like insurance premiums come down quite significantly.
Better Happiness
Marriage offers the kind of stability that allows you to really focus on all the other things that are important to you. A good marriage can create a platform from which you can pursue your goals and passions. A mutually supportive marriage can do wonders for the self-esteem and goes a long way when it comes to realizing your ambitions.
