My friends have quoted me as saying “dancing is my life” and while this may have been a broad, wild statement, dancing is a big part of who I am. My Bear says it’s one of the things he loves about me and we have made it part of who we are.
It is with no surprise then that our first dance is something we are looking forward to. There are a number of things we’ve had to think about and consider:
The song
Your first dance is seen as an announcement, an extension of your introduction as husband and wife and it is also an opportunity for the bride and groom to offer another piece of their story to their guests and witnesses. When choosing your song there are a few things to think about:
• Up-tempo or ballad?
You will be opening the floor to an evening of dancing; going for an up-tempo jive may set the tone for party to follow. A ballad could, however, serve as the quiet before the storm, your last quiet moment before the celebrations really take off.
• Your song
Many couples have a favourite song, a song that speaks to your relationship or carries a special significance and is associated with a great memory. Why not use this song for your first dance and build on an already extraordinary tune.
Open invitation
Bridal couples often invite their bridal party or family members to join them on the dance floor during their first dance. Think about whether you would like to incorporate those closest to you or if you would like the floor all for yourself. Remember, this is one of the last moments of the day that will belong to you and your big love. Which brings me to my next consideration…
When?
When is the best time to have your first dance? It does make sense to have your first dance after dinner has been served and the speeches have been completed. This way you’ve ticked most of the nerve-wrecking boxes and can focus fully on your boogie.
Choreographed or free-style
As mentioned above, my Bear and I love to dance and we have dazzled a number of dance floors with our free style moves. To set this dance apart we would like to wow our family and friends with something special which led to our decision. Think about what would make you both happiest.
You might come up with something completely different to what my Bear and I have planned. Whatever your choice, I can only hope our result is the same: Bliss.
See you on the dance floor.
